Substandard print quality
I recently ordered more that $600 worth of printed merchandise from Gelato Canada and was very disappointed with the quality of the printing—which was washed out, faded and the colours completely off.
When I tried to obtain a refund, I had to go through their customer support email and although Gelato replied (three different names on the correspondence) nothing was resolved and I received no response to repeated emails.
Bottom line: if you are starting an online business that depends on a quality print-on-demand service, then please look elsewhere. Right now there are few options for Canadian entrepreneurs and, although the actual product (latte mugs, water bottles) was of good quality, the printing was so poor that the products are unsellable. I'm now left with product that I cannot sell and moreoever, Gelato will not complensate me even though I sent images of the actual artwork alongside their substandard offerings.

Doesn’t Work
Trying to get a product to publish to a woocommerce site was like pulling teeth. Unless you pay for a subscription, your design uploads are limited. From minute one of working with this platform it was a struggle that led only to a chat session and the deletion of the account. Not worth the trouble.

Expensive with minimal free options
The chart outlining the different fee options Gelato offers is incorrect. Mick ups are not available with the free version. You are also limited to five designs.
If you want more designs or mock ups to promote your products you have to pay. It's not great for begytesting the water with e-commerce via POD.

Good POD company
very good customer support. I have been refunded a couple of times (in about 100 orders) with no problem at all. People saying that the print is dull or whatever have no idea of the printing requirement. You need to give them either srgb or CMYK (depending on the product). If you give them normal rgb, you will have dull colors.

Most features are paid
You are unable to use the mockup generator or personalisation for free. The free plan only gives you one very basic mockup, which is virtually useless on its own. The fonts available on free plan are very limited. Ordering samples was a nightmare. There was an issue with delivery of some products but no messaging to say which ones. The chatbot spat out answers that had no relation to my queries, then kept answering with the same words whatever question was asked.
I had hoped trying out the free plan would at least be encouraging and give me a good incentive to go to a paid plan. But not so. I also found the product selection limited, if you aren't doing art prints. The process of designing and adding product templates is not as good as other POD places I have tried. UI could be better. If you are new to POD I would avoid their services. Unless you are selling printables.

Gelato Features & Services
Gelato offers a product personalization tool that allows shoppers to customize their designs across all platforms. With automation options available, the customization process is streamlined.
Gelato features a design tool and mockup generator, enabling you to visualize products beforehand and use mockup images as product images.
While Gelato doesn’t provide design services, you can hire a freelancer.
Unlike Printful, Gelato doesn’t offer warehousing services, but this is typically not an issue since POD doesn’t require inventory.
Gelato supports personalization across all platforms, but only Shopify allows shoppers to personalize during purchase. You can manually enter order information to get your own online store.
Gelato now offers customized packaging inserts and personalized packaging labels for Gelato+ and Gelato+ Gold customers, starting at $0.49 each. With on-demand printing, you don’t need to send packaging to a warehouse.
Gelato has numerous print locations globally, ensuring quick and efficient order delivery with localized production to reduce shipping time.
As you receive qualifying orders, the packaging inserts and labels are automatically produced and delivered with your products.
Printing Technologies
Gelato offers a variety of printing technologies. Some printing technologies may only be available for some products.
Direct to Garment (DTG)
This is the most common method for apparel. It is a digital printing method that uses inkjet printers to deposit ink pixel by pixel. The ink soaks into the clothing fibers, which creates a consistent quality final product. The image is likely to be protected with repeat washing.
The DTG is the standard process because it is the same as digital printing for paper.
Gelato’s embroidery printing is eco-friendly. It uses sustainable materials and processes to ensure minimal environmental impact and high-quality designs.
Gelato doesn’t offer screen printing, but additional print areas and alternative techniques will be launched soon to provide customers with more opportunities for branding and customization.
Customer Support
The Gelato customer support team only offers support to its sellers. As with other print-on-demand suppliers, you handle customer service with your customers. Because Gelato is a third-party drop shipper, your customers need to learn that Gelato had anything to do with the order.
The company has a vast selection of resources written explicitly with customers’ queries in mind if there’s a problem or a hiccup. They also have 24/7 customer care and a dependable reputation for being friendly, fast-turning, and incredibly helpful.
Scalability
Considering how impressive Gelati is, you’ll be pleased to know that bulk purchasing is available. The portion size matches the pricing, making it a practical choice for larger gatherings. Its long-lasting appeal ensures quality, whether in small or large quantities.
Products
Gelati boasts a wide range of products with unique flavors, ensuring there’s something for every taste bud. Whether you crave a classic or an adventurous option, Gelati’s diverse selections won’t disappoint.
Locations
Whether downtown or in the suburbs, conveniently located gelato shops offer pleasant seating areas where you can enjoy your treat. You’ll find fair pricing and delicious, though somewhat limited, flavors.
Ecommerce Platforms Integrations
While other platforms might offer broader integrations, GearLaunch’s Shopify integration provides enhanced stability and tailored features. This means less troubleshooting and more business growth for Shopify users. Non-Shopify users can also set up GearLaunch on their domains, with some additional manual effort for order processing and fulfillment.
Marketplace Integrations
Gelato’s online marketplace ecommerce integrates seamlessly with Etsy and Orderdesk for Amazon, eBay, and other platforms. Custom websites can use the Gelato API, requiring a developer.
It connects with website builders, social media platforms, and online marketplaces, boosting visibility and sales on Etsy, Amazon, Instagram, TikTok Shop, YouTube, and more.
Gelato Alternatives
Consider these alternatives if Gelato doesn’t look like your ideal printing partner.
Printful
We recommend Printful as a top print-on-demand service to our readers because it offers more than other companies. They offer a wide variety of products, along with design and branding services. If your brand grows to the point where you want to keep some stock on hand for faster fulfillment, you can use their warehousing services, too. Printful costs a bit more per item, but consistency and quality are worth the investment.
Printify
Printify is another big name in the POD industry. It’s like both Printful and Gelato. The major difference is that Printify offers more products overall. You’ll get a vast international network of print providers to choose from. Printify could be the right choice for your ecommerce business if you want more variety or take advantage of embroidery.
GearLaunch
GearLaunch is another solution if you want various products and printing technologies. Like Gelato, you can accept international orders since both platforms ship to many countries worldwide. The drawback to GearLaunch is that it only integrates with Shopify stores. Printful or Printify will work better for you if you use another platform.
Is Gelato Right for Your POD Business?
Gelato is an excellent option for starting a store or growing an existing one. Its unique approach to local production worldwide reduces costs, standard shipping times, and carbon emissions. Gelato has the industry’s highest average score in Trustpilot, so its customers are definitely happy with their choice.
